The Voice: Kelly Clarkson gains edge as Corey Ward wins Wild Card Instant Save and makes top nine

Kelly Clarkson gained a slight edge Tuesday on The Voice as her singer Corey Ward won the Wild Card Instant Save to join the top nine.

The 39-year-old pop star will have three singers performing live next week while fellow coaches Blake Shelton, 44, John Legend, 42, and Nick Jonas, 28, each only have two singers remaining on their teams.

Corey, 34, faced off against Blake’s singer Pete Mroz, John’s contestant Ryleigh Modig, and Nick’s performer Jose Figueroa Jr during the Wild Card Instant Save with viewer voting determining the winner.

He belted out a unique rendition of the Selena Gomez song Lose You To Love Me that resonated with voters.

Corey thanked his coach Kelly for teaching him how to be himself before show host Carson Daly, 47, announced the results of voting.

‘What the …?’ Corey said in disbelief when he learned he was advancing as Kelly rose from her seat and applauded him.

The season 20 show opened with the results of viewer voting after the top 17 performed Monday with Blake’s team learning first that America saved Cam Anthony.

Blake then was forced to save only one of his three remaining singers and picked Jordan Matthew Young, leaving Pete and Anna Grace in the running for the Wild Card Instant Save.

Pete advanced to the sing-off based on viewer voting and Anna was eliminated.

Nick’s team was up next and Rachel Mac was saved by America, while Nick decided to keep Dana Monique.

Jose Figueroa Jr based on viewer voting represented Nick in the Wild Card Instant save while Andrew Marshall and Devan Blake Jones were eliminated.

John’s team was thinned out next as America saved Victor Solomon and Pia Renee was picked by her coach to remain in the competition.

Ryleigh advanced to the sing-off based on voting while Zania Alake was eliminated.

Grammy winner: John decided to keep Pia on his team and Ryleigh represented his team in the Wild card

Kelly’s country singer Kenzie Wheeler won the public’s vote and the American Idol star decided to keep Gihanna Zoe.

Corey advanced to the Wild Card based on viewer voting while Zae Romeo was eliminated.

The Voice will return next week on NBC with the top nine performing live.
