Marla to Square feet, Square Yards, Square Meters, Square Inches, and Acres
Before jumping straight into the conversions, it is important to develop a fair understanding of all the measuring units related to land.
So let’s get started.
Marla
A marla is a traditional unit of area that is used in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The marla was standardized under British raj to be equal to the square rod, or 272.25 square feet, 30.25 square yards, or 25.2929 square metres. As such, it was exactly one 160th of an acre.
Square Feet
It is a unit of area measurement equal to a square measuring one foot on each side.
Square Meters
The area is equal to a square that is 1 meter on each side. It is used for measuring areas of rooms, houses, blocks of land, etc. The symbol used to represent a square meter is m2.
Square Yards
It is a unit of area measurement equal to a square measuring one yard on each side, which is equivalent to 0.8361 square meters. The abbreviation of square yards is yd2, sq.
Square Inches
It is a unit of area measurement equal to a square measuring one inch on each side and it is also equivalent to 6.452 square centimeters. Its abbreviation is in2, sq.
Acres
It is a common measure of the area that is widely used in the U.S. and U.K.
1 acre equals 4,840 square yards (4,047 square meters) or 0.405 hectare; 640 acres equals one square mile.
In Pakistan, the traditional unit used for the measurement of plot size is ‘Marla’. Apart from marla, the plots are also measured in terms of square feet, gaz or square meter.

Different Measurements of Marla
Marla is the traditional unit for the measurement of plot size. It was started in the British era and today it is used in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.
Interestingly, the conversion of marla into square foot varies in different regions of Pakistan. Usually, there are two conversions, which are as follows:
- The first conversion states that one marla is equivalent to 272.25 sq. ft. It is the standard unit for the measurement of revenue records.
