Outer Banks on Netflix: where are the series filming locations?

We’re all just *slightly* obsessed with Netflix’s drama series Outer Banks, and have been ever since it landed on our screens back in 2020. With series 2 just recently drawing to a close and series 3 (hopefully) coming some day soon, all we want is to soak up as much Outer Banks related info to quench our thirst in the meantime. Good news, then, that we’ve rounded up all the various filming locations for the hit show, so you can get planning your next superfan getaway.

Clearly, the show involves some pretty idyllic coastal locations, so it’s no wonder that fans have long discussed all the spots where the series is filmed. Beaches aren’t just for TV, after all.

The show was set to be filmed in North Carolina’s outer banks, where it’s set, but after the state brought in discriminatory anti-transgender legislation, which required people to use the bathroom designated to the sex they were assigned at birth, show creators decided to change location.

“We wanted to film it here,” co-creator Jonas Pate told the Wilmington Star News. “But Netflix made the right decision to insist on inclusivity and we completely agree with them.”

Although Outer Banks is set in a fictional town on the outer banks of North Carolina, the series is actually filmed in locations around Charleston, South Carolina. Located in Mount Pleasant Old Town Pitt Street features heavily in the show, along with Hunting Island where many of the nighttime scenes were filmed, including the ‘Redfield Lighthouse’ which is actually Hunting Island Lighthouse.

One key location on the show is Tanneyhill Plantation, the home of Sarah Cameron and her family, and once the home of the fictional Denmark Tanney, a former slave who found gold while captain of the Royal Merchant ship. In reality Tanneyhill Plantation is set at South Carolina’s Lowndes Grove, a luxurious 14 acre property and wedding venue.

Scenes featuring water were typically filmed at Mount Pleasant’s Shem Creek, while The Wreck, a real restaurant in the same area is used as the restaurant Kiara works in, also named The Wreck.
