How many people are there in the world? A very interesting question. Currently, there are almost 8 billion people roaming the Earth, and in the last 200 years, a massive increase in the population worldwide has occurred.

In this article, we will dig deeper to see how many people there are in the world as of 2020 and what scientists estimate in the future. We will also take a closer look at where all these people are living on Earth.

World Population in 2020

Today, there are around 7.8 billion people living in the world. An exact number is not possible to get since some countries don’t have the resources and systems to accurately measure the number of citizens.

To put the number in another perspective, there were around 300 million people living on Earth in year 0. It wasn’t until the 1800s that the world population reached the first billion.

The number one reason to the exponential growth in the 1800s and onwards is the industrial revolution. This gave developed countries a longer lifespan and the opportunity to save more lives.

In the year 2000, there were around 6 billion people living on Earth, and in only 19 years, the world population has increased by almost 2 billion people.

Today the Whole World is the Same Age, find out how!

How many people will live on Earth in the future?

In a report from 2017, the UN estimate that the world population will increase to 9.8 billion before 2050. Some experts claim that we will reach 10 billion people in less time, whereas other experts claim that the number of births will lower as countries like China and India gets more developed.

However, it’s not only in the largest countries in the world where the population increase. Africa is the continent that is estimated to have the biggest population growth in the future. Most experts estimate that there will be 1.3 billion more people in Africa before 2070.

It’s also believed that the world population will start to flat out by the end of this century, but it’s also likely that we will be 13 billion people living on Earth by 2100.

This is an important matter and it’s even more important to ask, how many people can our Earth sustain? Most statistics and reports tell us that we need to change our ways of living. Furthermore, food production will need to increase to feed our ever-growing population.

China has a population of 1.39 billion people as of 2019, which makes it the most populated country in the world. The growth is a result of the major economic growth, increased life span, and better living conditions for a large part of the inhabitants.

For some years, the central government limited Chinese people to only be allowed to have one child per family. Since 2016, each family is allowed to have two children.

Experts also claim that China will face the same decline in birth rate as most Western countries as the country become more developed.
