More and more brides-to-be are choosing stylish settings, alternative gemstones, and unique cuts for their engagement rings. If you’re looking for a standout ring that reflects your individual style, why not consider a totally unconventional shape? Geometric and fresh, hexagon engagement rings are the epitome of alternative.
What Is a Hexagon Engagement Ring?
Much like the name suggests, a hexagon engagement ring is when the ring’s stone is cut into the shape of a hexagon; however, other shapes—often round-cut gemstones—can be placed in a hexagon-shaped setting to appear more angular.
Hexagon-cut diamond engagement rings are somewhat rare due to their nontraditional shape, so you might not be able to find one at the first jeweler you visit. On the other hand, if you do a bit more digging, you’ll find that this does have room for customization. The style is perfect for the bride-to-be who desires something totally one of a kind and appreciates a vintage aesthetic with a modern twist.
Think this alternative shape is the right choice for your engagement ring? We spoke to Anna Bario and Page Neal, owners of Bario Neal, to find out everything you need to know before you commit.

Pros and Cons of a Hexagon Engagement Ring
More and more brides are gravitating toward hexagon engagement rings due to the nontraditional nature of the shape. While this stone shape is rarer, there is still a range of options for the style. The hexagon cut works with a variety of different stones, particularly color stones. “This cut brings a lot of light into the center of the stone, but ultimately, any stone can be cut hexagonally,” says Bario. Additionally, hexagon rings also look great in a variety of different settings—from solitaire to cluster—so you have options.
If you choose a hexagon cut for your stone, keep in mind that the edges could dull over time if your ring is not properly taken care of. Therefore, ensure that your stone is in a durable setting, such as prong or bezel. Also, since hexagon engagement rings have defined edges, they are more prone to snag on clothing or soft surfaces. Since snagging may be a potential issue with this style, make sure to take your ring off while doing any activities where it could get in the way. Keeping small ring dishes around your house to hold your ring when you take it off is an ideal way to prevent damage.
What to Look for in a Hexagon Engagement Ring
- Does a gemstone have to be hexagon-cut to be in a hexagon setting? Not all hexagon engagement rings feature diamonds that are actually cut into this shape. Round-cut diamonds are commonly placed into hexagonal settings, making them appear geometric. These stones look more angular when accompanied by a diamond halo or a fleet of baguette stones.
- Is there a setting that works best with a hexagon-cut stone? “Settings with prongs, like our Kalmia Hex White Sapphire Ring, blend a traditional vibe with a more modern cut,” says Bario. It gives it a unique look, plus a more secure position within the setting.
- How are hexagon-cut diamonds generally priced? “This largely depends upon the quality of the cut, along with the other three factors used to determine diamond quality: clarity, carat, and color. This cut is gaining popularity, and this may mean it will soon be comparable in price to a round-cut diamond,” Neal explains.
How to Care for a Hexagon Engagement Ring
For cleaning your diamond hexagon engagement ring, just use a bit of lukewarm water and gentle soap. Then, carefully use a soft-bristled brush to scrub your stone until it is once again sparkling and clean. However, if you opt for a colored gemstone, it may require more care than a traditional diamond. For example, if you decide on a topaz gemstone, consider that it ranks slightly lower on the Mohs scale of hardness than a conventional diamond. This means that you need should be extra gentle when caring for and cleaning your ring.
Regardless of the stone, keep the ring stored in a cloth-lined box when you’re not wearing.
