EU Says Removable Smartphone Batteries Will Return in 2027 [3]

Apple is expected to release the first USB-C iPhone later this year, and we have Europe to thank. After decreeing that most personal electronics should use the USB-C port, the European Council has turned its attention to smartphone batteries, advancing a proposal from last year
If passed by the European Council and Parliament, the regulation would leave smartphone makers with four years to decide how to change their products. According to the proposed rules, smartphone owners should be able to remove the batteries in their phones without any special tools or expertise
This also applies to other products with batteries like e-bikes, electric vehicles, laptops, and more.. Most smartphones (like the Galaxy S23 above) have standardized on the flat glass slab form factor—glass screen, glass back, and a frame of aluminum or some other material in the middle

Explained: Why modern smartphones don’t have removable batteries and how does it affect consumers [4]

Apple started the trend of offering non-removable batteries to phones with iPhones. Phone makers had no choice but to comply with the latest trends and make sacrifices as consumers wanted more sophisticated smartphones
Even laptop manufacturers gradually stopped making devices with removable batteries. Let us discuss whether removable batteries are good for consumers
Batteries have a thin electrolyte that separates the cathode and anode electrodes which store the energy. The electrodes can generate a lot of heat by causing a short circuit if it comes into direct contact

Smartphones with removable batteries are never coming back [5]

But when it does, it’s usually followed by even more fervor and upset users.. Case in point: Apple finally admitted it did a poor job communicating to its customers about how and why it slowed down iPhones with older batteries.
It’s not that Apple can’t make an iPhone with a removable battery, but because it doesn’t make any sense to. Removable batteries had their time in the ’90s-00s.
Asking Apple to make an iPhone with a removable battery will never happen. but I feel confident making this claim because Apple has never released an iPhone with a battery you could easily remove.

Phones With Replaceable Batteries: How They Might Make a Comeback [6]

Phones With Replaceable Batteries: How They Might Make a Comeback. New rules could mean you’ll be able to replace your phone’s battery
Once upon a time — by which we mean the ’90s and early 2000s — if you wanted to swap out your phone’s battery for a new one, all you had to do was slide the back casing open and pop the battery out. The rise of sleek but impenetrable smartphones largely saw an end to user-replaceable batteries
Two separate pieces of right-to-repair legislation working their way through the European Union institutions — one of which was passed by the European Parliament at the end of June — could force phone manufacturers to make significant changes to the way they design phones. Once they come into force (expected to be in 2025 and 2027, respectively) they will put in place regulations that compel makers of phones and other small devices, like portable game consoles, to allow people to replace the batteries themselves.

And though the selection of smartphones with removable batteries is slim, they’re an attractive and reliable bunch.

Easily replaceable phone batteries might be back, and I’m here for it [11]

The other day, I was going through a bag full of old tech — I mean, really old tech — trying to convince myself to finally get rid of phones that I hadn’t used for 10 years or so when I came across a battery. One of the batteries that I used to carry around in case my phone ran out of juice.
Instead of having to carry around a portable charger or search desperately for a wall socket so you could charge up your failing phone (assuming you had a power cord with you), you could pull off the back of your phone, replace the out-of-power battery with a fully charged one, and proceed happily on your way.. However, at some point, manufacturers (and, perhaps, most consumers) decided that they wanted their smartphones as light and slim as possible — so slim that there was no room for a battery that wasn’t glued into place
So slowly but surely, the replaceable battery disappeared, and we all learned to carry around chargers or cords for just-in-case scenarios (especially if your phone’s battery was starting to age).. I have to admit that the first time I bought a phone without a replaceable battery, I felt a little peeved

Years ago, removable batteries graced every phone and the era in which you could bring an extra battery for your device was considerably the golden age for a smartphone. Having an extra pack of battery for your phone eliminates the worries of your phone dying while you’re outdoor like trekking or camping.
To suit the market’s ever-changing needs, an increasing number of firms decided to ditch the removable batteries off their smartphone offerings. Why? We’re not sure either, but from an engineering perspective, a non-removable battery offers a slimmer phone design and a much more compact waterproofing design.
Keeping that in mind, it’s not surprising to see removable battery-toting smartphones lose their momentum in today’s industry.. However, some tech companies still stubbornly resisted the fixed battery bandwagon and have continued to create Android phones with removable battery

EU wants “readily removable” batteries in devices soon—but what does that mean? [25]

Whenever regulation passes that seems to herald the dawn of a new age of repairable devices, there is almost always a catch, a loophole, or at least an “it depends.” In the case of recent headline-grabbing battery legislation out of the European Union, we’re waiting to see what counts as “readily” when it comes to removing and replacing device batteries.. Last week, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of new rules for handling batteries of all sizes in the EU, due to be implemented within 3.5 years of passage or as early as 2027
Portable batteries incorporated in appliances shall be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user or by independent operators during the lifetime of the appliance, if the batteries have a shorter lifetime than the appliance, or at the latest at the end of the lifetime of the appliance.. “Readily replaceable,” as addressed in the next paragraph, is when, after removing a battery, you can substitute a similar battery “without affecting the functioning or the performance of that appliance.” For all the things specifically defined, outlined, and estimated in the 129-page “COM(2020) 798 final,” there’s not much more about what the phrase exactly means.
As the European Parliament’s press office puts it, these regulations mean that portable batteries must be designed “in such a way that consumers can themselves easily remove and replace them.”. Later in the document, regarding battery disposal, it notes that end users have a responsibility to properly sort out those batteries that are “readily removable by the end user without the use of professional tools.” Does that clarify what “readily replaceable” means, or is this no-tools line specific only to keeping people from throwing out batteries inside their electric shavers? There’s no clear answer yet.

EU will force phones to have a removable battery [26]

The European Union is at the forefront of sweeping changes coming to the world of technology. In a few years’ time, the continent will force the iPhone to adopt USB-C in some form
In a new piece of regulation from the European Parliament, the continent will soon force appliances — including smartphones — to ship with easily removable batteries. The policy, which targets the sustainability and durability of batteries, will introduce changes for the entire smartphone market.
The change mimics the reasoning behind the forced USB-C adoption, which melds both sustainability and ease-of-use.. There is currently no timeline for replaceable batteries in smartphones

Europe will require all phones and other gadgets to have user replaceable batteries by 2027 [27]

The European Union has adopted new regulations regarding batteries that could extend the lifespan of gadgets, cut back on electronic waste, and generally improve sustainability.. While the regulations apply to all sorts of batteries and covers things like waste collection and use of recycled materials, one section has been gathering a lot of attention: smartphones and similar gadgets with built-in batteries will need to make it easy for end users (ie: you) to remove and replace those batteries by 2027.
Just pop off the back cover, take out the battery and you can replace it with a new or freshly charged battery. These days there are only a handful of phones that make it that easy.
Often those batteries are also held in place with sticky adhesive that needs to be melted or cut before you can remove the battery.. While I’m not sure that the new regulations will lead to a Renaissance in phones with batteries that can be replaced without tools (after all, it’s harder to make a truly waterproof phone in this style), the regulations do spell out that in order to be considered “removable,” a device needs to have a battery that “can be removed with the use of commercially available tools and without requiring the use of specialized tools, unless they are provided free of charge, or proprietary tools, thermal energy, or solvents to disassemble it.”

EU votes to bring back removable batteries in phones and appliances [28]

In a sweeping change to an existing law, 587 European Parliamentarians voted to force all gadgets to have easily replaceable batteries, with only 9 opposing the change. By replaceable batteries, they mean the kind that powered 12-button phones, replacing which used to be as simple as popping open the back cover and slipping in a new unit.
This means when the law is enforced, users – at least in the EU – will be able to replace batteries themselves. It will take a while before the law is implemented, though, so don’t expect changes overnight as of yet
There was a time when smartphones had batteries that could be easily swapped out – no elaborate tools, heat guns, or special training needed. But the demand for thinner and lighter devices led to battery packs that were almost inseparable from the phones

Dive into anything [29]

Join us on our discord to continue the conversation: https://discord.com/invite/Qp8D7HtQVy. Everybody keeps complaining about phones with 2 year software updates, and yeah I get it
Most people will be at 80% or less health after 2 years so now a phone that lasts all day, will now die by 8pm.. If phones had removable batteries back, along with the longer software updates, that would add tremendous value to the user
And before you say removable batteries cost too much space, the Galaxy S5 from 2014 (almost a decade old) had a removable battery…it also had expandable storage, a headphone jack, a physical fingerprint sensor, capacitive buttons (wastes more space then on screen ui), and a freaking IP67 RATING!. I think everyone bitching about plastic backs and wanting thin glass back phones (which is still the stupidest thing ever) is partly to blame for the removal of removable batteries.
