Being a life-long lover of Tchaikovsky’s music and in particular Swan Lake I wanted to find out more about what sections of the original score were taken out, what was written by someone else, because the ballet had a rough start and was not the icon of ballets that it is now. That knowledge might have been in there but I got to the point that I had to start skimming and skipping over a lot because what I got was waaaaaaaaaaay more than I asked for and not in a good way
I do know how to read music and I played an instrument but this book was over my head. And too many pages are taken up with reproductions of bars from the score.
But the expressive purposes to which Tchaikovsky puts it here and its place in the harmonic context of the middle of the ballet warrant giving it a new connotation. It is the important subordinate of E major, the triad of its flat submediant.” HUH?

In contrast to some of the carping seen in various reviews of Ansermet recordings at Amazon, about imperfect intonation and such, I would just like to say that in a certain way, this occasionally strange, sonically “tangy,” slightly off tonality is actually part of the charm of these performances, for me. No, they do not achieve the almost super-human perfection of intonation and purity of tone of the great modern super-orchestras of the American and European capitals (obviously a bit of an exaggeration, since those orchestras are comprised of humans and they do usually achieve it).
It’s not that these modern orchestras can’t be thrilling and powerful. Human musicianship will win out from time to time, especially when inspiration is attained
