Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/delist/Maple Leaf Rag 2008. This performance of the Maple Leaf Rag is uncertain and awkward in places and I don’t think the performance can be considered a Featured Sound
Recorded by a Wikipedian, User:Apatterno and uploaded by them. The music was published in 1899 and is therefore in the public domain
Previous nomination: Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Maple Leaf Rag. – Nominate to delist as while there are some good parts of the performance I don’t think it is quite in “our best work” territory
The “Maple Leaf Rag” (copyright registered on September 18, 1899) is an early ragtime musical composition for piano composed by Scott Joplin. It was one of Joplin’s early works, and became the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers
The piece gave Joplin a steady if unspectacular income for the rest of his life.. Despite ragtime’s decline after Joplin’s death in 1917, the “Maple Leaf Rag” continued to be recorded by many well-known artists
The “Maple Leaf Rag” is associated with the city of Sedalia, Missouri, although there is no record of Joplin having a permanent residence there before 1904. Joplin arrived in Sedalia in 1894 as a touring musician and stayed with the family of Arthur Marshall, who later became one of Joplin’s students and a ragtime composer in his own right. Joplin played as a solo musician at dances and at the major black clubs in Sedalia, among them the “Maple Leaf Club”

Joplin combined classical music, marching band and blues to create a new musical form called ‘Ragtime’. Smith college in Sedalia, MO, Joplin played at the Maple Leaf Club
In Joplin’s many years of composing, he was never actually acknowledged as the great composer that he really was. There just was not any opportunities for black musicians during those times to have their music heard by anyone in the serious musical world
He was later discovered here by John Stark who eventually published his first composition know as the Maple Leaf Rag. Louis where he had the opportunity to perform for the next five years
This opera, called Treemanisha, was the first and only ragtime opera, but unfortunately, it only lasted one show. This was the falling point of his career, and he never regained the popularity he once had at the beginning of his career

It was one of Joplin’s early works, and became the model for ragtime compositions by subsequent composers. As a result, Joplin became dubbed the “King of Ragtime” by his contemporaries
Despite ragtime’s decline after Joplin’s death in 1917, the “Maple Leaf Rag” continued to be recorded by many well-known artists. The ragtime revival of the 1970s brought it back to mainstream public notice once again.
Scott Joplin worked with both the ragtime song and the instrumental rag, but it was with the latter that he reached greatness. Instrumental rag evolved from joining the syncopated ragtime rhythms with the form and regular duple pulsations of the march
The Maple Leaf Rag is Joplin’s most important composition and the best-known instrumental rag of the period. This composition made Joplin’s reputation and gave him income that changed the conditions of his life; however, it is not certain precisely how the publication came about
It has also been speculated that the choice of the word “maple” in the title has links with Canada — the goal of black slaves escaping to freedom.. – Sign in with a library card Sign in with username / password Recommend to your librarian
It’s a truism among piano teachers that the average piano student can’t wait to play Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer. And while The Entertainer’s first two sections are undeniably catchy and memorable (particularly if you’ve heard the local ice cream truck blare it incessantly on a summer afternoon), as a whole it’s far from Joplin’s best rag
Despite being one of his earliest compositions, it became a model for other ragtime composers.. Maple Leaf Rag and the many beautiful and exciting rags that Joplin subsequently wrote brought him widespread fame and eventually the moniker “King of Ragtime.” Today, Maple Leaf Rag is one of the most famous of rags, probably exceeded only by The Entertainer.
It is never right to play ragtime fast.” Despite this directive, Maple Leaf Rag and other Joplin rags became staples of “cutting contests,” battles between piano players attempting to outperform each other, often by playing as fast as possible.. The success of Maple Leaf Rag played a pivotal role in bringing music created by African-Americans into American popular culture
This recording of “Maple Leaf Rag” features a player piano roll of a performance by Scott Joplin himself. He performed the rag on a special piano that placed dotted marking on the paper, which was punched out later and duplicated
For this reason, the piano roll performance is rather stiff and clumsy, but we can still see how Joplin would interpret his most famous piano rag.. “Maple Leaf Rag,” like all rags, is a multithematic form; that is, it is a composition made up of a succession of three or four melodic sections
(Listen, for instance, to John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” and note its three distinct themes.) “Maple Leaf Rag” has four themes, and like the march and other rags it changes key after the second theme.. The rhythmic relationship between the left and right hand is typical of all rags

English: A 1906 recording of American composer Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag (1899) played by the United States Marine Band. This is one of the earliest known recordings of this work by Joplin (according to a discography of 78rpm recordings of Joplin works compiled by David A Jasen in “Scott Joplin – Collected Piano Works” 1981)
The discography of Joplin’s work on 78 rpm records compiled by David A Jasen in “Complete works of Scott Joplin” indicates this is the third known recording of the Maple Leaf Rag. Edward A Berlin’s book “King of Ragtime” in a note on p310 indicates that the recording of 1902 listed by Jasen is not infact the work by Joplin, making the 1906 recording the second existing record
